    About Us

    The Rural Development Department was established on May 1, 1960. The Rural Development Department of the Government of Maharashtra is working for the all-round development of rural areas. The main objective of this department is to implement various initiatives to create clean, beautiful and green villages so that the villages of the state should be self-sufficient, all basic facilities should be available there and all facilities should be available to the people there in the villages themselves, to implement various initiatives to eradicate poverty through the Maharashtra State Rural Livelihood Improvement Mission, to provide shelter and shelter-related facilities under the Indira Awas Yojana, and to strengthen the Panchayati Raj system by empowering people’s representatives under the training and development program.

    Various welfare schemes and initiatives are implemented for the development of rural areas and for the citizens through this department. Development works are also implemented through local self-government institutions such as Zilla Parishad, Panchayat Samiti and Gram Panchayat. The goal of this department is to achieve constructive, comprehensive and sustainable rural development through a strong Panchayati Raj system.

    The Chief Executive Officer works at the district level i.e Zilla Parishad; Block Development Officers (BDOs) work at Taluka level and Gramsevak officers work at the Gram Panchayat level as administrative heads.
